Can you use white vinegar to lower pH in nutrient water? My well water pH is 7.8. I try to lower my pH to 6.3. General Hydro is $35.00 gallon. Vinegar is $3.50 gallon. Does white vinegar kill microbes or have a negative effect on nutrients? It seems to bleach out any color. Does white vinegar KILL my RECHARGE or kill microbes in soil?

White vinegar is fine to use in your res to lower pH. White vinegar is about 5-10% acetic acid and 90-95% water. Bacteria create acetic acid btw. Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is only hydrogen, oxygen and carbon. GH has phosphoric acid as well as some citric acid. The phosphate is what makes GH more money. All these pH products have molecules that releases hydrogen. That’s how they work to lower pH. What they end up as is what’s important to know. GH will have available phosphate and vinegar doesn’t. Not a huge deal.

Vinegar has been working for us really well to lower the PH for watering our plants. 🙂

I noticed it doesn’t have the staying power of some acidic compounds, but once in a while I will lower the ph a little bit with organic apple cider vinegar. I’m going to try a pinch of citric acid since I have it laying around to provide a good sour kick to infused hard candy.
