Yo fam,
First time grower and have my first auto coming due. Having trouble sorting when to chop. Watched hours of YouTube and pounded the search bar here but I’m beginning to think the only way to learn this is by screwing up. Firstly, I can’t really tell what’s clear vs cloudy. Second, I have some pics where everything looks clear/cloudy and a diff pic looking like 30-40% amber. All the photos are from this morning. Finishing week 10, on a 10 week strain. Give me some good ideas, please.
Ideally we’d like to harvest with 100% cloudy trichs, not usually possible though. So just keep scoping and harvest when you can get the best balance. Amber trichs are degrading so keep that in mind. Sugar leaf trichs will amber first, make sure you’re checking the bud not the sugar leaves. 👍🏻
Something that really resonated with me was someone saying, if it looks like it’s sparkling like diamonds they are still clear. For me, that really helps. Even though I have high-powered microscope. I wasn’t confident. I’m gonna go ahead and venture that those are in fact getting quite milky
Top picture looks like damage trichomes and not amber. The rest of the pictures tell me you’re 1-2 weeks away still.
ok more like 1 week.
Jeweler’s loop didn’t help. Trichs looked clear with loop light on, amber under ambient light. USB microscope worked best for me using video mode while slowly dialing the focus, then freeze framing the playback for a closer look.
have read were once trichomes start to turn “amber” they change at a 5% amber per week therefore one needs to figure flower times in relation to this (now that when you 1st detect amber color whic might be a week + before your harvest) Now with pistals you gauge your harvest with there color when no loupe is available
I am taking a new approach to this according to the courses I am enrolled in. My current studies indicate that more important than color is, well basically, how full the triche head is. A triche is constructed of several parts. It’s like a little cannabinoid and terpene factory. Once the nutrients and some precursors travel through the hypodermal cell in the stalk and pass the basel cell (holds head to stalk) and stipe cells (holds up secretory cells) they enter the factory. Next they hit the secretory cells which helps creat cannabinoids and then upward to the secretory vesicles where terpens are manufactured. At the top of this beautiful structure is a cuticle which fills up with cannabinoids and terpenes created below. When these cavities are filled is when you should harvest. At least according to Frenchy. Makes sense to me.
