Check out green gene’s YouTube channel, he shows a diy rosin press build that’s pretty awesome.
Been thinking about getting a press… doing lots of research. So far the two best options look to be…
( https://nugsmasher.com/proddetail.php?prod=NugSmasher_12T )
Pros- pre-built units, small and portable, $500-800 for a personal sized unit. Built in Southern California. lifetime warenty (shipping not included), the name makes me laugh.
Cons- units are riveted closed, must be returned to the factory if there is a problem. I’ve read a few reports of people having problems and they had to pay ~ $150 for shipping to get it repaired under warenty.
#2 Low-temp plates w/ cage and a harbor freight press-
( https://www.lowtemp-plates.com/collections/rosin-cages/products/3×5-lowtemp-cage-kit )
Pros- $480 for the plate setup and ~$120 for a press = ~$600 rosin press. press up to 20g at a time. Seems like a pretty affordable price for a high performance press. snazzy cage thingy helps align plates. Plates made in Colorado, I only hear good things about lowtemp. Upgradeable
Cons- I have to put it all together. Less portable. 1 year warenty on controller (lifetime on plates). I am my own tech support if something goes wrong.
Not sure if I can spend the money right now, so this project will likely have to wait. Would love to hear peoples thoughts on my two options tho!
Like you Soup I would love to just go buy a nice machine for over a GRAND!!! But don’t have the extra Chedder just laying around. I’ve looked into the DIY and that seems to be the least expensive IF you have all your own tools which I do not…which brings me to my next point. Low temp plates seem like the way to go, just need to save up and get the plates and a good 10-12 ton hydrolic press. Can some one recommend a set of plates that aren’t $300 plus?
We bit the bullet and bought a NugSmasher. LOVE it!
The only thing I would add to what Soup said is that I would prefer a Dake press to the harbor freight press. It costs $200 more I believe, but I have heard very few complaints about this press. I love harbor freight for cheap tools, but I have had less than optimal results from their products’ longevity. (Translated into non douche- harbor frieght tools have a limited shelf life in my own experience).
Check out honey river. He’s blowing up. Hes doing a danksgiving promo for a complete plate set for $650. He does customized work. Free engraving and will make you whatyouwant. Caged setups none caged and the really cool thing is he wires in a pid and enail attachments with a free banger so you can literally pressand dab.
With that being said i built my own 20ton for around $500us. If you have the ability that is the way to go.
As far ashf presses go. Get a 20ton for around $150us and buy a 12 ton bottle Jack to replace the20 ton jack. You’ll get longevity out of it and have peace of mind. Youcan max out the 12ton bottle jack and your press frame will still be rated for another 8 tons. As long as you dont abuse them they’ll do great. Mine has been holding strong for2years now.
Theres alot of negative feedback in rosin groups regarding low temp plates. Some havent gotten their complete orders. Some are clearly refurbished returneditems. Forthe same price as honey river but less features and mass produced plates why risk it when you can call the maker and trouble shoot anything you might havea problem with.
Honey river with a20ton hf will set you back about$900us but it’ll be exactly what you want and quality.
Ps i dont have any affiliation with these guys ive justwatchedthem grow as a company and whole heartedly think thats theway to go if you dont build your own.
I posted a year or so ago about ordering my rosin press. I was looking at Alibaba for the automatic push button press that Rosin Tech basically painted and rebranded. Nodnarb talked me out of it and suggested Honey River. I cannot recommend them enough. Scott is awesome and has his cell number on Honey River Facebook page. I called him on a Sunday and he answered and we talked for about an hour. Not to be too long-winded, Scott has been the epitome of customer service and I have run his original toolbox setup for over 12 hours a day for several days with no degradation of quality of output. His product is quality. I have a Dake 10-ton press and Honey River setup and paid $960 total for everything. I understand everyone cannot afford it but I made my money back in a week after hooking up my press… just sayin
For personal use and affordablity check out the canna clamp. I’ve been watching Midwest concentrates as well, they are the makers of said clamp. Basically what they did was find a loop hole in Irwins trademark and are able to 3d print holding pads that fit perfectly onto the Irwin trigger clamp and connected to the pads are heated plates.
The only problem with these is that most trigger clamps are only rated to 600# of force so they were more designed to be pressing out hashes or kief. Since kief or sift doesn’t need alot of heat or pressure to get flowing they work perfectly for it. They also work for flower but the optimal psi for flower is 1200#psi. Meaning you’ll only be at half of the optimal psi for a full extraction. Does it still work with flowers? Absolutely but that’s why I suggested it for personal use. You’ll only be able to press out a gram or two at a time. For personal use that’s really all you need too. They also are only $250us but are running a special where you can send in your own diy trigger clamp and they’ll shave $50 off your order. So for 200-250 you can get a quality little trigger clamp press that will be great for personal use rosin Making. If you want to press out more than a couple of grams at a time, you’ll need to step up into something with tonnage behind it.
yup got a nug smasher and it does make you laugh every time you see the big name on the front. I think it works great but i am a noob to the concentrate world. it was great that it was number one under $1000 so it will pay for its self if you have any good amount of extra product that would be “trash” anyway, and got it with the quickness cause that Amazon drone shipped it right to my house. well i got it on amazon, no drone on the planet could fly with this heavy ass package (which also came labeled on the outside as a rosin press but what should i expect from the discretion kings “NUG SMASHER”) i have not heard the negative stories and now just hope my unit stays strong but these things seem bulletproof, just a jack in a casing. I do wish i got the one that has the pressure gauge on it cause like i said i’m a noob and need this all laid out as easily as possible. at least there are more and more pressing videos out now cause when i got mine there were like 2 on the internet that shows the whole process. I don’t want to compare it to a MarsHydro light but it’s a wonderful entry point press, and if your abilities outgrow the machine you could put it on craigslist and move up to a higher quality higher priced unit. gotta keep growing
In conclusion: Nug smasher-Love it, under $800 gets to your house in 2 days with prime, but be ready for a big ass box that lets everybody paying attention know your biz so pick it up at the UPS if you ship all your sketch shit to your parents house.
