During veg, the cover crop helps provide the extra nitrogen and other minerals for the worms and a bacteria dominate soil to digest and poop out minerals, enzymes, etc. During flower, the cover crop is eliminated in favor of mulches like hay and straw to provide a habitat more friendly to the fungi and the phosphorous they provide the roots and flowers. Fungal bloom boostas stat. There are phosphorous fixing bacteria like in Mammoth P. so not all the plants P needs come from fungi. Cannabis prefers a soil dominated by bacteria but during bloom the plants exudates explode the fungal growth/role for extra flow of water and minerals, not just P. When mycorrhizal fungi attach to roots in the rhizosphere creating the mycorrhizae bond, magic happens indeed. That’s why it’s good to get it forming that relationship in the rhizosphere early.
It’s been a long time since I watched his videos but to me, the cover crops also allow for a greater bio-diversity. As Jmystro said plants exudates directly picks the life that lives in its root zones so having many types of root zones around ensures greater nutrient cycling in your entire container.
I have been pushing no-till in DC and using 15-25g going on 3rd cycle now. For me, the greatest challenge was keeping the soil evenly moist at all times.
I went blumats but as Scotty recently told the DGC you can flood your grow and I sure did my first and only time using them thus far. So I have not gone back to them again yet.
I did SIP which I like a lot but found the top 6 inches could not suck up the water and still needed a lot of attention.
If your soil dries out your going to see mainly various deficiencies due to lock out.
I look forward to jumping in the conversation.
I have some videos up under CannabusDC if you want to see some of my stuff from DC
I totally agree the cover crop and companion plants add that extra wide range of carbs for the microbes BigWorm. I never tried those Blumats. They seemed sketchy. Any type of bottom feeding system I’ve used with success needed to be wider than tall. When I learned in nature most plants will not grow branches outside the width of the root mass. I took that shit to heart and try to allow for as much root mass as vegetative biomass. My largest yields have always been in beds. I want my container width to be the same width or wider than the plants finished canopy otherwise my yields drop. I’m glad Sean showed up to give Scotty that little push to try something new. I’m excited for him.
I have found the best way to keep the soil moist and even through out the whole pot, is plenty of mulch and i give a light spray every day to keep the top part of the soil moist
I haven’t had any fungus gnat problems so far because of the feeding frenzy of critters and a little neem meal as a top dress.
Any way good work every one, really good content 😀
Just for a small price of $10 a month you too can grow like a Pro! No bottles no problem, just cover crop on top and night crawlers at the bottom. DGC DGC DGC DOpe Ass Knowledge!

I second that @ FishGanjaGuy. learn more by just reading the responses from all the seasoned growers.
