What’s Growing On?:

Reading a book called banana by Rob Dunn. Different book than “how to eat a banana”Talks about how we keep taking plants/ food out of their native environments and are then surprised when the monocrops eventually fail. It makes sense if you’re coming from across the Atlantic that you’ll pick the biggest yielding, shortest flowering, most hardy varieties (to survive a journey overseas). But because they were all from the same starter plants, they had no diversity and when disease hit, it hit every identical plant. cassava in Africa (originally from Asia). cacao in Brazil (originally from Central Mexico). The future bananas. There are a ton of different bananas but they don’t get planted because they can’t ship/sell them. Peru potato diversity. The book starts with the Irish potato famine 1845-1883. They asked the smartest people in the country to write letters explaining the cause of the failing potato crops. Hundreds of letters came in. Most blamed bad seeds/ bad weather, angry God, etc. 3 letters from 3 separate people said it was a fungus.

Dr Berkley (mycologist) was the one person who knew it was a fungus and came up with these immediate recommendations: don’t replant last years  bad potatoes as this year’s starters. burn the diseased plants. Sterilize the fields with hydrogen sulfate.

Others fought him on this publicly and it was enough to shut Dr Berkley up. No one followed his directions for years. Finally years later (after most people had already died or left) they started following Dr Berkleys advice and it went away. It made me think about what other really important ideas get suppressed because of social pressures and media pressures.

Cannabis is good. That was such a risk to declare publicly 30 years ago. It could get you ostracized from your community/ peers. Fight the lies legalize t shirt. That was the day I met Jack Herer.
