I keep being told the microbe products like Recharge are a waist with synthetic nutrients because they kill the beneficial bacteria or microbes. This doesn’t sound right to me. I’d think if you’re synthetic nutrients are that strong they’d kill your plants if its killing bacteria. If you guys could clear this up it’d be awesome. I love the show.
Thanks,
Tyler
No, mineral ions do not kill microbes. You’re hearing nonsense from people who literally lack basic knowledge of bio-chemistry,
Some fungi won’t go to work if there are more then enough nutrients for the plants to consume. Possibly what your referring to. Most of these plant specific microbes have been selected to live and thrive in the specific conditions we grow in.
I run Jacks 321 and Recharge. I can tell you they play very well together. Very well… Good luck with it.
here’s an episode with some more details about that topic.

Organic inputs break down with the help of microbes to become nutrients bio-available to the plant and the plant releases sugars to feed the microbes in turn. Using a synthetic nutrient will not kill microbes, but also synthetics dont need to be broken down by microbes to be plant available. The use of synthetics can act as a supplement, while your organic inputs break down to cover deficiencies, but the problem many growers have is they over load the soil with redundant inputs they dont need and still water in synthetics on top, causing a lockout. Thats like eating anything and everything in sight and also taking a daily multi-vitamin as well and wondering why your unhealthy.
Are you using soil or an inert soiless medium?
Well put. Me personally, I don’t mix synthetics and organic. I keep some Miracle Grow around in case of an SOS emergency where I need some instant uptake but I still have yet to use it. 🙂
that very interesting. would microbes be beneficial to a product like veg+bloom or new millennium that has both synthetic and organic ingredients?
All bottled nutrients are mineralized, derived from organic matter or not, and are in a plant available ion form that has no carbon (organic) bonds. “organic” labels on a bottle are marketing. There are no special forms of mineral ions that roots uptake from soil or an inert media. There is no difference to the plant. You may call a system organic or natural but plant food is not organic.
wow that’s actually really interesting to see it put that way, thanks.
Jmystro do you have your own synthetic nutrient recipe mix? I would like to experiment with custom hydro nutrients someday but got a lot to learn.
Well said Mystro! People who think they are growing organically with bottles needs to read books not threads. Good stuff!
Not all ions are driven into the plant and some settle in the media or bind to each other like calcium and phosphate. Microbes are key in freeing these ions and delivering them to the plant. Especially important for creating available phosphorus. This process also prevents salt build up so its beneficial on a few levels.
ohhh, that makes sense… almost like liquid enzymes?
It is more or less a matter of having to feed the microbes when you are using “synthetic” nutrients. You could add an extra carb or sugar source to your feeds or even kelp for that matter. There are products such as Myco Chum that are made for that very reason. Recharge has kelp in it, so that would most likely be enough.
synganics is a word for a reason bro. Ive had some phenomenal results with synganic hempys.. Its become my preferred method of growing.
Some of the microbes are inside the roots, so no matter what, those won’t be killed. Plants take in the microbes through the root hairs, oxidize the cell wall, which the plant “eats”, and without the cell wall, they start dividing at a hyper-fast rate. The plant then expells the microbes back into the soil, and a cell wall grows back. Basically, the plant is making its own microbes, the microbes that it likes the best, on top of every other miracle it performs. This is why no-till works better.
