So try as I might I can not find the answer to this question. For the purpose of pressing rosin. Which is the best yield return from starting material weight to final product yield? Dry sifting using screens. Bubble hash using water and ice and bags. Dry ice hash using bubble hash bags and dry ice dry shaken. Or just pressing the material raw? The bulk of the material is trim and sugar leaf. Trying to get more solvent less hash out of my plant material obviously I’ll bubble hash the left overs from dry ice or dry sift but what is the best option? Thanks can’t wait to chill with you guys again.
Dry Sift vs Bubble vs Dry Ice vs no preprocess for making rosin.

I’m not a big extractor myself but the few times I’ve tried I noticed the better the input the better the output. Old shake vs fresh buds gram for gram you get better yield from fresh.
Also keep in mind the fact some strains are resin whores and are better for extracting than others with little trichomes.
The first step when deciding your process is looking at your trics. Tall skinny trics will work great for dry sifting you can the press. The shorter trics knock off better with ice in bubble hash. You can then press both into rosin, but like Sherlock said return is mostly based on starting material.
Hay PotentPonics for me I like to dry ice through 110 bag make 3 runs at about 2 minutes each the 1st is a nice gold and 2,3 get greener . (Less trycs more plant) .now I get my 25 mic screen put each run in one at a time and press . The gold is nice and runny and will give the most rosen. The greenest will just spit out the rosen but it there. But out 1,2,3 runs of kiaf is around 11g. pressed out it drops to about 5g of rosen. Hope this helps . Growers love and have fun….
Great question. I have been wondering the same, but never found a good source of knowledge on it.
Yes a good question and I’m a rosin noob so I welcome the discussion.
I like making and smoking bubble hash but if you are making bubble and then pressing it that sounds like a lot of extra work…
Ya do not press dry ice Kief it sucks!!! Bubble hash and dry sift are the best to press. Personally I would press bubble because dry sift is harder to yield. But I like pressing nugs or shake pucks because that’s where all those tasty terps are!
This is an old post but I thought I’d throw down some knowledge for anyone that runs across it.
Turning a hash Extract into rosin. Let’s start by saying dry ice is the worst method for this. The ice is so cold that it will damage everything, trichomes and plant matter, leading to more contaminants in your hash. Which will alter your yield and quality of rosin.
Dry sift, is the best because it preserves the most terpene content. Second is bubble hash or ice water Extract.
The problem lies with the relative humidity, when it comes to an optimal yield, in most cases you can press but to obtain an optimal yield, you will have to reintroduce moisture. The easiest way is to let your starting material sit in a air tight container with a boveda 62 for 12-48 hrs. No more than 48 because it has been observed that the packs will absorb terpenes, since they are a water based compounds.
As far as pressing it goes
Lower Temps work great for hash. Try 170f-190f. I do most of my pressing at 190f because it brings out the quantity without effecting the quality. A lot has to do with how long you press it. Below 200f you can press for up to 3-4min depending on how much you’re pressing at once.
Always prepress your material so it is uniform in shape and thickness, to avoid blow outs and contamination. Use an unbleached coffee filter or a 25u screen. Wrap it up and put it between parchment that has been folded over twice. You want to do this in case you break though one layer, what’s lost will be collected on the second layer.
Pressing technique is low and slow.
Hold down on the parchment with the straightener, applying light pressure. Start your timer. After 45 seconds apply a little more pressure and wait another 45 seconds, apply as much pressure as you can now and wait another 45 sec. Again making sure your Temps are below 200f. 190f being the sweet spot.
Explanation on the pressure and time. The way I think of it is the first wait time is to allow everything to warm up to temp. The next wait time is allowing everything to be start flowing. The next wait time is to allow the oil to be pushed away from your starting material.
These techniques are stated for none melt able hashes, to clean them up, so to speak. What you are doing is breaking all the trichome heads and extracting the oils within them.
These methods are universal for flowers or buds, whatever you want to call them but you will obtain a more true terpene profile if you bump up the temp to 220f and press for 1min – 2min. Again depending on your load size.
On the most basic level to achieve quality rosin you need a hair straightener and a quick clamp. Minimum 600#, optimal is 1200#. Body weight will work with the hashes but not flower. Keep your puck sizes as close to 1 inch squared or diameter. That way you’ll know you are getting all the force onto your starting material. The bigger the force the bigger your starting material can be.
I’ve been trying to spread the knowledge of rosin, to anyone that will listen because open blasting is not safe and shouldn’t be done by everyone. Rosin has its place to the everyday user, that can’t source a quality Extract.
I have been pressing rosin for a couple of years now and have done way to much and expensive R&D on the matter. I’ve worked with everything from a hair straightener to my 20ton shop press, that I built. If anyone needs advice on rosin or a good setup, I am here to pay it forward, to anyone that needs help

If you used a rosin press, how much pressure would you use with the three stage process? I have a 12 ton press with 3×5 plates. I’ll be putting a pressure gage on it soon.
My favorite method for harvesting trichomes is by using the dry ice method but instead of using dry ice, you use quarters as an agitator. Again lots of trial and error has gone into this, don’t use a bubble bag any bigger then 190u or smaller then 160u. I personally use a 160u.
Don’t exceed 20 grams of trim or flower at a time. And use $3 worth of quarters. I use quarters, you can really use any hard object that won’t leech or tare anything.
Shake away over a table. 1min is a grade.
Another minute is b
And so on until you reach 7 minutes. Over 7 minutes and you’ll start to shake out to much plant matter. You can keep them all separate but when it comes to rosin you can collect it all together and press away, as stated above.
I hope this all helps whoever might run across it.
Stay stoned
Thanks for sharing Nodnarb. Thinking of getting some low temp plates and a 10/12 ton press. Any thoughts on temp/pressure? Also any thoughts on equipment?
Yo!
As far as a press, go big or go home. I use a 20ton harbor freight, which is awesome for personal use. As long as you don’t abuse it. Any press will have failures if you abuse it. My advice is get a 20ton and buy a separate 10ton bottle jack, so that way you know for sure you’re not abusing it.
As far as plates go, there are so many of them to pick from. Which ever you choose, I’d go with square plates. Either 3×3 or 4×4. If you won’t be pressing a lot out, 3×3 is going to allow the oils to escape the heat faster, which preserves the quality.
Check out my post called “DGC rosin psa” to get the rest of the information you asked for, as far as temp, time and pressure and if you need anything else, let me know.
Peace.
I have a brand new to the market elecrtric press. Its 6×8 and pneumatoc buttoj operated but not by air but elecrtic. Either way, Nodnarb, you helped me make my decisiom to sift instead of using raw material.
Im interested in the puck process. For these pucks you say, are you doing anything to the sifted material besides pressing them by hand or do you have any recommendations on machine for ypu kmow maybe 4×4 or 4×6 pucks for the 6×9 machine? Also, any information you have, please, share away. Theres a whole ton of people out there eager to learn. Thanks a ton for being a pioneer!
