FoxFarm Happy Frog Posted by Bigsexy | Jan 28, 2020 | Grower Questions | 8 | What’s up DGC? Quick question about Growing media and just want everyone’s general consensus on Happy Frog by Foxfarm. Just looking for the good, bad and ugly. Not a lot to choose from around here and I’m very, very limited.
Coach Steve on January 28, 2020 at 6:05 am I used it for a few years. Good soil, but kinda dense. I had best success when I mixed it with Light Warrior 50/50 and added perlite. I use Ocean Forest now with biochar and vermiculite which I like much more. Log in to Reply
Givener on January 28, 2020 at 8:29 am I used it for some outdoor autos last summer and it burned my seedlings badly. I also tried it for some tomatoes and it burned them even worse. I’ve read that the bags are inconsistent, but I definitely got a hot one. Once the plants (slowly) put on some mass they seemed to handle it okay, but I would look for something else or cut it heavily. Log in to Reply
Doc Browns Green Thumb on January 28, 2020 at 1:53 pm I used happy frog for many years and while some have found to it be inconsistent, I have not. Also, unlike Ocean Forrest, it does not contain very much nutrition. It does have a small amount of guano and castings. Overall, I would not hesitate to use it if this is what is available to you. However, if you decide to make your own soil there are options. Check out SOUP’S advice on this. Log in to Reply
Doc Browns Green Thumb on January 28, 2020 at 1:55 pm Also, I never cut it with anything, except Ocean Forrest and I would even germinate my seeds in it. Never a problem. Log in to Reply
GodfatherKush505 on January 29, 2020 at 7:29 am Doc has it right. I dig Happy Frog mixed with CoCo. My base soil mix started with a bag of Happy Frog and a bag of CoCo Loco. I added rice hulls and some grow stones instead of using perlite. I have used the soil multiple runs for over 3 years now. It saves time and money using Fox Farm soils. As far as the company goes they are legit. They arent selling out to big business and their soil is sold in my local garden nursery. That is the main reason I suggest Fox Farm soil as a base blend. You can get bags of it easily and know its ready to go. Growers Love. -GFK Log in to Reply
SOUP on January 29, 2020 at 10:13 am I personally really dislike Foxfarm soils. I’ve gotten several bad bags from them in the past and their quality control always seems terrible. As far as cheap hydro store bagged soils, I recomend biobizz, vital earth or roots original. I also recomend checking out some of the options from build a soil. The build a soil living organic soil mixes or the 3.0 mix are all way better than the typical stuff you’d find in a hydro store. Shipping makes it a bit more expensive, but you’re getting a much higher quality soil that you can reuse for years. Or you can copy the build a soil recipes and make your own using local ingredients. Or here’s my recipe: https://growerslove.com/blogs/grow-tip-of-the-week/make-your-own-soil?_pos=2&_sid=3b4e6e8a9&_ss=r Log in to Reply
Dabby Haze on January 29, 2020 at 2:49 pm I gave up on Happy Frog this year after having used it for 6 years. The last two years I have had knats like crazy from Happy Frog. My grow store convinced to switch over Nectar For the Gods soil and I haven’t seen a knat anywhere. Happy Frog needs to be kept moist; if it dries out it’s hell getting it hydrated again. There are better bag soils out there than happy Frog. Log in to Reply
