Dude, Scotty, Guru, and the DGC:
I’ve got a 3×3 living soil bed in a 5×5 room. I made my own version of Coots mix, put a bunch of red wigglers in there, and have been keeping it watered to keep the worms happy. I’m about to pant a nice cannabis-designed cover crop mix until i just noticed these little red phuckers crawling around on my soil! They are about the size of a grain of sand and have 2 longer antennae coming off their heads. I think maybe aphids? Can you take a guess from the pic? I’ve sprayed down the soil w/ neem oil but am wondering
- what’s the best way to get rid of these phuckers for good? I don’t even have any plants planted yet…
- Is there an easy-to-maintain and good-for-indoors beneficial predator i can get in there? Praying Mantis? Something that’s easy to do in an indoor setting and that wont start crawling all over my house and freak my wife out?
- Have you guys ever heard of growing cannabis alongside Garden Giant Mushrooms? An organic famer friend of mine says he does this with all his veggies and they turn out great. Apparently they are great for soil decomposition/nutrient turnover but I can’t find anything about it on the inter-webs.
- There’s some white mold-looking stuff growing on some of the soil. I’m assuming this is okay/expected for living soil? Can you confirm/deny??
Backstory – I’m an emergency room doctor and love MJ because it’s 1) fun 2) sooths my raging ADD and 3) helps me sleep / forget the terrible shit I see at work. This past quarantine year I grew a batch of autos but then realized it’s a felony in my state (CT) so stopped (oops). We are about to legalize so I’ve re-vamped my grow room by finishing that part of the basement and generally just making it awesome for when I can (hopefully) legally start growing in another month or so.
Thank you for all you do! I love your show and listening to you guys bullshit makes me feel like I’m not alone out here in prohibition land!
PS – Guru, I love your science mind but when you are explaining something you have a habit of raising your voice in inflection at the end of the statement and it sound a bit pretentious/condescending (which I know you aren’t – just trying to provide some helpful feedback!).
PPS – I think when you are doing a message from a sponsor (like Pulse grow or recharge ect) you should say “and now a message from our sponsor” or some shit like that (like on NPR). Sometimes I can’t tell if you’re recommending a product because you like it or because they are a sponsor (which is totally cool/okay – as a scientist/researcher I know you can’t do great things without $$ to support it)
