What’s up DGC I was hoping someone could help me understand what’s going on with the hempy buckets. I’ve been listening to the show for a long time and always heard scotty going on about them and decided to try and make some myself for my next run but can’t quite understand how to do it. My plan was to use 35lb (approx 6 gallon) kitty litter buckets drill a hole about 2 inches up fill the bottom with chunky perlite and the rest with coco perlite and adding a piece of pvc as a watering tube. Would this work? What’s got me confused is I see most people here using two buckets and a net pot to setup the resivoir system. Is there a difference between the two? I can’t seem to find anyone building hempy buckets the way the folks here do so hopefully I can get some light shed on this. Thanks in advance dgc.

I don’t do this method, I use Autopots and have grown in soil and other media. The only thing I would say is that I am not a fan of perlite. I prefer hydro clay balls, perlite tends to float and I don’t like it. It also crushes over time. My favourite grow media is coco and/or clay balls.
The PVC as a watering tube would just be another way to fill the system, much like an Earthbox does. The 2 bucket res with the float valve makes it so the water level in each plant pot doesn’t go above the top of the level of the net pot. Otherwise each plant would oversaturate. Just like the Earthbox, which has an overflow cutout so each Earthbox so you dont oversaturate the soil. The 2 bucket reservoir makes it so you don’t have to refill each pot more often. With developed plants drink more and would require you to fill each pot separately more often. Pumice is also an excellent option to perlite and doesnt break down like perlite does.
Watch the Real Bucket opening with Cortez the Conqurer on YouTube shows and helps explain it
You got the basics down! Check out Grobuckets (they come in 3 packs on Amazon) which are pre-build inserts for 5 gallon buckets – looking at them may help to explain the concept as well. I wish there was still the video of Scotty making the home made system with the float valve was just before the youtube channel got nuked 🙁
