Thanks everyone for the help so far as I struggle through my second grow.
- The Jungle Lava strain had an intersex issue and pollenated much of my crop.
- I learned that roots coming out the bottom of a pot is NOT a good way to tell when to up pot.
- I had a thrip (yes singular but still I had one).
Now I am on Day 57 and I noticed that a bunch of new growth has started to form on the tops and sides of the main colas. It is happening on both remaining strains I have growing.
Jelly Rancher (Humboldt Seed Company) is supposed to be 45 day strain
Garlic Budder (Humboldt Seed Company) is supposed to be 70 day strain
@45 days both strains had clear trichomes and fresh looking white hairs. I am inexperienced, but neither looked “ripe” in any way. They have steadily ripened since then. The leaves are fading, hairs are turning orange and the plant is drinking less. I had planned to go to 65 days or so and then all of a sudden today I see all this new growth.
Is this normal?
Is this a sign of something good or bad?
Since most of the crop is seeded, I plan to freeze and wash the harvest for hash. I am not concerned about the seeds or the flower, but I want the trichomes ripe. Is it true that you can tell when to harvest from the percentage of milky to amber trichomes? I heard the late great Frenchy (RIP) say that you cannot tell from the trichomes but I don’t know any other way. For a novice grower like me, what is a reliable and simple way to determine the peak time to harvest for hash?
I posted a couple sample scope shots of the trichomes. It is really hard to get a good shot of those with a handheld scope while they are on the plant! Anyone have a good method for shooting trichomes on the plant?
Thanks again for all the help. I am so happy I found the DGC. You really are a great group of people.
From the third shot I would say that flower is ready. The fourth pic might have a couple days to go. Sometimes you can harvest your tops and let the bottoms mature some. If you want to havest all at once you need to decide if the colas are important enough to you to harvest before the rest are ready. Those not so amber are still gonna get you high.
I am thinking along the lines you are. Planning on chopping tomorrow. In the first picture, that little green growth at the top just popped up overnight. Happened in a bunch of spots. Any idea what that’s about?
Pretty sure they are the start of foxtail like formations of calyxes which are the plant putting more effort into getting pollinated or light stress. Sometimes they are late flower nanas (maleflower) which may or may not have viable pollen within. I might be wrong bit i notice it happen sometimes when i leave em too long.
Not sure. Saw that in my spring crop that I finished flowering in April/may. I think mine started to reveg. Like Mega says below, old plants do weird shit. The only normal looking plants I have right now are recent seeds. The rest have been alive a long time and sometimes shows weird shit. I am cleaning house of the old genetics tho.
I guess it really was a 45 day strain. I have most of it in freezer now for hash and some in the freeze dryer. Once I get the seeds out I should be able to smoke some tonight. What ya doing with those “old genetics”?
Old genetics mean last round of stuff I was playing with. I need to make room for other small plants of new varieties coming in. I will run flower and a few more F1’s at the same time
