Hello all DGC,
What do you all use to clean and lubricate your grinders with? Particularly cleaning the outer edge of the mesh screen within the grinder [fig 1], as I can clean the middle section pretty well with a brush. I have heard of putting it in the freezer, but I’m not sure about the condensation forming as I try to clean the screen with a paintbrush. Also, I know how obscene it must sound, but I have been using a thin film of WD-40 to lube the top grinding portion [fig 2] of my grinder to keep it from getting stuck. I have looked into using some kind of hemp oil instead but wanted to see the DGC’s opinion on the matter.
Cheers!
dont lube your grinder man.
Isopropyl Alcohol will desolve anything clogging it up but take any rubbers off before you use it.
I feel like iso makes the grinder sticky, like it thins the resin instead of removing it so I end up kinda smearing it around. I guess that I could dilute it enough to not make it as sticky, just feels wasteful. Also I hate the squeaking and my weed getting stuck in there from the black ‘tar’ stuff. I know that I should just keep it clean and stop complaining, but beeswax or hemp oil seems so easy. Thanks for the suggestion Toffee!
Are you using 91% iso? Because you will definitely end up with a gummy texture if you’re using 70%.
Not sure what sort of grinder you have there, but one of the best grinders for easy grinding and virtually no maintenance are the Brilliant Cut Grinders made by a Canadian company Grinders for Life. Not cheap, starting around $70, but definitely one of the best grinders on the market.
They offer both aluminum and stainless steel models.
It’s a Santa Cruz Shredder; but yes I was using 70% thought that the rest was just water, so I’ll definitely try that 91%.
Alittle olive oil dap around the rim really lubricates the twisting motion.
A dime in the screen part really helps knock some of the kief free.
I would use 99% and you can get a gallon for like $30 shipped on ebay. Let it soak, you could even recover all the stuff left behind but that’s another question. I spray the thread with 99% and use some with a sharp point to scrape the threads.
STOP using WD40 and use oil or better yet a little coconut oil as lube instead …However if you clean the reads good above you will not need any at all.
Peace and Love!
Never ever ever use WD-40 on your grinder again or with anything you plan to smoke or consume something from. you can use a drop of coconut oil and rub it along the edges of the moving pieces.
I’m not smoking WD-40, it was just a more of a joke than the truth. I only did it once and thought there has to be something that is better and won’t degrade/rot. Thanks for looking out for me, but I’ve stopped smoking weed for my job. So it’s more for a discussion question.
I mean shit your already using wd40!!!! Just put the grinder over the stove turn the thing on high , cut the bottom off a soda bottle and just wait for It to start smoking and inhale!!!! Taking out the knives part of the hot knife dab. What could go wrong!!!!!!
DONT DO THAT. AT ALL.
New grinders are $20!!! Just saying. Get what you can out of it. Don’t use chemicals unless your completely stripping it and don’t plan on saving anything. Otherwise get plastic Bristle brushes and get what you can.
Lol, you think I should go all in and just use some 5w-10? Mobile 1 has never done me wrong! 🤣 Thanks for the laugh Cos
Alcohol wash then soapy hot water rinse is what I do. Can’t take the squeaking, well shit let me grab you some tampons at the store today. Haaaa haaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaa But really I do a lot with boiling water. Like attracts like. So leave nothing and attract nothing?
I just buy one every year toss the other one the garbage.
Yeah I see your point, landfills make for good hills anyway. I’ll say to my grandkids “see that hill I made that.” 😂 just busting balls, please no hard feelings MidMo
