Hello y’all. I’ve been growing for a short time now and love it. Now my roommate has caught the Cultivation bug with happy mushrooms. So my question is this. Can I use my roommates used mushroom bags as mulch? Good or bad?

Trichoderma is one of the microbes we use and will usually naturally take a top spot in the rhizosphere and is also the bane of existence for mushroom cultivators due to it’s ability to overwhelm mycorrhizae. It might feed the trich in the soil and provide some benefits but I personally wouldn’t toss my spent blocks into my pots, mainly cause I like building outdoor patches. Mycotek might be a good source on this subject, don’t know how open he is to questions but worth a shot if you’d like a vet’s opinion.
Yes you can. It will make a decent mulch.
Spent mushroom substrate is the soil-like material remaining after a crop of mushrooms. Spent substrate is high in organic matter making it desirable for use as a soil amendment or soil conditioner. Sometimes this material is called spent mushroom compost. Yes you can use it as an amendment.
My neighbor has been using for his lawn mulch for years and I’d pick portabella’s growing naturally out of it during the spring.
ooops meant to reply to danka
I used the Barley Straw spent mushroom bags from BAS as mulch until the Mushroom farm they sourced from went under. BAS has recently started selling their own Mushroom bags, but I haven’t tried them yet.
The older they get, the more the Trichoderma starts to take over. Once you see the color start to turn black, that is the Trichoderma becoming more dominant.
