Hey dudes.
I am new to growing and now a DGC Patreon. I have done a bit of research into seeds and types of cannabis, they say all the original strain’s are gone and can’t be found, and everything now is all mixed genetics. Two questions is this true? and if not where can I find these original seeds?
Blackbird seed preservations has some good landraces. There was another company I believe Doku Seed Company. If you go to the know your breeder videos on the DGC podcasts you can see both of these companies spotlights. All the info for those breeders with be in those podcasts and you will be able to make a decision from there. Those old genetics are still out there just need to find the right company that actually has the real deal and both of these companies do!
In my opinion, unless you are a breeder or an extraction artist, growing out original landrace or foundation strain is a waste of effort. The flavors are usually one note and the flaws in the genetics are not bred out of the cultivar.
If you really want to know roots that is what to look for though.
Seedsman has alot of older genetics.
I just saying some of us much rather smoke some OG that actually tastes like an OG and not a bouquet of floral, fruity, sweet doughy, sagey, sour cheese notes sitting on top of a diluted base of supposed OG funk. Just saying not everyone wants the handful of skittles some of us wouldn’t mind a pack of some green apple now and laters instead.
I have been getting seeds from new420guy seeds new420guyseeds.com for landrace and others. I have a Columbian Gold plant in a tent that is a week from harvest. The buds look and smell exactly the same as what I remember when I as a teen in the 80’s. He does not charge an arm and a leg to seeds.
In general so much is hybridized these days. You really have to look in the lineages of plants to get an idea of what you are buying. When I was looking for an OG type plant i tried to find something that had a tied lineage to something old school or semi-old school. What I noticed is that you have to find breeders who care about the same intricacies that you do. Anyways I looked into Humboldt Seed Co. and they do most of their breeding outside and they tend to continue selections within a line to bring out the next generation and then they rename the strain every year or so. For example I’ve been growing Asphalt Plant for a little while now, but it was originally called Venom OG and is now called All Gas OG. No sweet funk and I’d say OG dominant for sure. So my advice is to look into where the strains come from and what was bred into them or if they are just further familial generations of a classic. Also if your looking for something with some classic lineage then Rasta Jeff of Irie Genetics just came out with a pre-98 bubba cross to arise (I think) and it’s called the moon tower. Honestly your best bet for finding those kind of genetics may be clones.
“For example I’ve been growing Asphalt Plant for a little while now, but it was originally called Venom OG and is now called All Gas OG.”
Just like video games that promise variety but re-color a guy from green to blue. Wow I had no idea they practiced such shady BS. Will never get seeds from humbolt.
They don’t hide that they rename the line. Each breeder is going to have their own of naming scheme or delineation of their work. As long as they are straight up about their work is what I feel is important. For a large scale breeding company I feel Humboldt Seed Co does a lot to help advance and respect the plant. I was impressed with him when he came on the breeder series. Marketing is just marketing sadly. It’s purpose is to deceive you.
Hi Kiefer-kif,
Are you sure you want the “original” seeds? Having grown out plants from (presumably) Mexican imports and 90s era Dutch seeds, I’d say that all the polyhybrid stuff floating around today is better. Seeds I found from bagseed purchased at Dead shows were better too.
Whatever direction you go in, remember that seed sellers act like they are selling you diamonds, but they are selling you coal. You have to sift through a lot of coal to find a diamond. Good luck and have fun!
If the original were so great… Why would we have mixed them up? Go try a wild apple.
