Hey dudes, I just wanna start by saying you guys are the dankest channel on the internet, I’ve learned so much from you guys.
So my dad was an OG outdoor grower back in 1969-75, he’s given me some tips that are definitely outdated but this one seemed interesting. After hanging the full plant for 10 days he swears by curing nugs with a small piece of orange or lemon peel in each jar. Granted he hasn’t grown in almost 40 years but he still puts some peels in his personal stash. Is there any evidence of this helping regulate humidity or revitalizing over dried product? People on reddit always say Boveda “too soon” will ruin flavor, however I’m watching the last episode now and Scotty says the boveda jar is fire smelling soo …Idk
I’ve got some product I wet trimmed a bit too much and it dried out too fast, so I’m gonna pop some peels in there for the hell of it and see what happens lol. I’ll follow back with results
I’ve definitely done that in the past. An old technique for sure. The concern is the decomposing of the peel inside the jar. It can bring in unwanted spores. But if you change it for a new peel everyday, I think that might skirt the issue. Boveda would be the current day answer, but hey, throw it back.
Nice! Thanks, I’ve got boveda’s in 7/8 jars and running the orange peel on the last one lol. I’ll be sure to swap it out daily, thanks bud
My first toke was 40 years ago….. Orange, Lemon, Banana peal = NO….. Bacteria and smell gets transfered to your bud…. Iceberg Lettuce is good because there is no smell, no taste and if you switch it out every 4 hours bacteria shouldnt be an issue, but…..(you never know – I use lettuce for my tobacco, have forgotten it in my tobacco for 2 days once or three times, no issue) Now the Boveda’s are very slow reacting IMO, they are only good for long term storage, they do not work fast enough if you are opening containers, they are meant to be sealed up and left alone. I bought a bunch of the Bovedas and not impressed at all, I only use for staorage but as of yet my smoke is gone too quick to store much.
Only, that’s exactly right. same for me too.
Keep in mind that the boveda challenge you heard was with finished bud; dried and cured. Adding moisture to cure is not a good idea, the bud should be dried properly first. If your bud is over dried, adding moisture isn’t going to help the cure. It may give the bud a little better burn just like you can add a leaf to a jar for a short time to keep the bud from drying out.
If I learned anything in the past couple of months it’s that you are curing the trichomes, not the bud. Use the dry to break down chlorophyll and get a smooth burn, cure or harden off the trichomes to preserve those oils and flavors. There are other things happening during this time as trichomes continue to mature and convert certain compounds into others –obviously I’m still learning the depth of this or I could explain more clearly.
Boveda packs are obviously a nice way to keep moisture at a preferred level for a more pleasurable smoke, but they are not meant to be used in the drying and curing process; nor is an orange peel. You can use it as a less controlled comparable to boveda packs, but I would not suggest to use them for curing.
Gotcha, I should have been a bit more specific. I’ve been curing this batch without any sort of desiccant for about 5-6 weeks, I’ve read that boveda can be introduced around that time. Whats your take on this, too early? and when do you consider the product fully cured? Thanks again for taking the time to answer, thats good to know about my over dried bud. Off to edibles it goes! lol
I haven’t used the packs, but 5-6 weeks is ok if you live in a dry environment or plan to store for a few months.
I’ve been working on a long cure, goal is to have a better product after 6 months. For me, it’s smokeable in 2-3 weeks after jarring, about 4-6 weeks after chop. From there it’s about maintaining the freshness and I’ve been smoking it while I keep the rest of the harvest in a controlled environment. I’m just about at 5 months now and didn’t get any change in potency or quality since about 6 weeks in jars. Yeah, it’ll take some time to master this.
Mixing my weed with whiskey, that was a ramble lol. I think I answered something there 🙃
mmm nice one. helpful too
Sometimes I see flower that gets stronger every day until it is TOO strong and giving out heart palpitations to the elderly. like you can smell that sickly sweet dankness that is fermented to pure perfection and never smelled that in 25 years of smoking until about 5 years ago… its like an amplification of what it used to be but I never knew it could become. And as the evolution happened I began to “smell the dabs” in the flowers so I knew which ones I wanted to press. I think it ferments rather than cure if done right? and done right is too strong for human consumption imho. Also Is there a different way to cure if you plan to press into rosin?
Back in the day my mentor would use “taco shells” to keep pounds hydrated.
He would lay a couple of large flour tortillas on top of the weed and close the bag for half a day or more.
My parents used to use the orange peel in their stash jar. Not sure why they stopped.
Nothing ever got funky or fucked up by either method.
I learned from the old timers to use and orange peel to rehydrate stuff that was too dry. Never heard of using it during curing. I still use that lil trick from time to time. I have also used apple, lemon, celery, broccoli almost any veggie with moisture content will do in a pinch. It works well as long as you just use what you need and dont put in a huge piece that will make it soggy.
