On September 26 I posted some information on using exclusively oyster mushroom grain spawn and trim, woodchips, or oats to produce co2 but provided no pictures to show how simple the process is.
Last week I started flowering two plants with two five gallon buckets of fermenting oats for supplemental co2. First get an airtight gasket lid, either the orange home depot style “one time use” pull tab lid (break the tab to empty, clean and reuse it) or the black threaded Gamma Seal style threaded bucket lid. Second get a 2 inch hole saw that fits your power drill. Third get on amazon and order some 1 1/4 inner diameter Uniseals and buy some 1 1/4 PVC pipe from the hardware store (shipping one length of pipe will be at least as expensive as the pipe). I couldn’t find uniseals for sale anywhere locally but they are cheap and plentiful online. I keep 750 gallons of water in tanks in my basement tied together by uniseals, its the easiest, cheapest, most attractive method i’ve found for creating reservoirs out of anything…they will create a water tight hole on a curved or flat surface. Even if you don’t need these buckets, chances are you could improve your grow in number of ways with a few uniseals.
Once you have all that on hand, cut about seven inches of pipe with one end having a slight angle to make the fifth step easier. Second drill a 2 inch hole (this needs to be a very accurate hole therefore holesaw) through the top of the airtight lid with the hole saw. Third clean up the hole with a razor or a file. Fourth, push the uniseal into the hole, it should be tight but pretty easy. Fifth, push the angled end of the PVC pipe through the uniseal. This either takes some strength or vegetable oil. I recommend trying to do it without lubrication as you may push it too far, in which case you have to push it all the way through to restart. Uniseals do not allow a pipe to be pulled out from the direction they entered. Keep in mind you only want a small amount of water over the tip of the pipe, you want a burping bucket, not a vomiting one. The deeper the pipe goes, the more of the fermented liquid it must displace to burp. Too much and you will have a mess. Keep that vent pipe shallow, folks.
Now take your bucket, fill it up to the feet of the drowning baby sticker with dry raw oats (if your bucket doesn’t have a drowning baby sticker go a little higher than half full with oats) and then fill it with boiling water. (if you dont add boiling water you will germinate a whole bucket of oats) Almost as soon as it cools it will start burping like clockwork. If it stops burping, the water level has dropped and your ferment can oxidize and start to spoil, it is still producing co2 but the bucket is no longer anaerobic which is bad. Try to keep it topped off with water. Adding trimmed leaves and diluting the mixture by draining off a little liquid and topping off with water will give the bacteria more fuel to burn before its a bucket of fully fermented garden hooch. This adult beverage is only for adult plants, best used as an amendment outdoors. Don’t drink it. Whatever goes in, comes out unrecognizable, whether its trim, squash bugs, or oats.
However if you have some mushroom grain spawn, you can drain the oats when cooled, mix in your spawn and get 10-12 weeks of heavy co2 production ending in pounds of bright blue meaty mushrooms that cost $20 a pound if you’re even able to find them at a gourmet grocery store. Just add a coffee filter and cable tie to keep the mushroom culture uncontaminated, but able to breathe. You will not be able to use the mushroom bucket to digest your trim so if trim nutrient recycling is a goal, go with the fermentation buckets.
Pictures below explain the steps above.
