Sup boys?
I have been running a UC hydro system for a couple of years now with great yields and some really good looking , potent bud. Recently I decided to go back to a few soil containers in an effort to get the most flavor that I can instead of just killer yields. I also see a lot of information on coco and soil/ coco mixes, and I have a few questions.
A) For the best smell and flavor… soil or coco? Or a blend?
B) Which invites pests more?
C) Can I use all the bennies with coco? ( primary reason for leaving sterile hydro system)
D) Can I reuse both? ( primary reason I went hydro in the first place)
I guess any opinions on overall potency would be appreciated as well.
Hopefully the DGC crew can shed some light ( cmh!) on the subject.
Cheers!
To address question A., I’m running a side by side comparison with
clones from a strain called Gorilla Bomb from Bomb seeds.
It’s GG4 x THC Bomb. Clone 1 is in a 4 gallon soil container with
FF ocean forest and happy frog 50/50 mix. Clone 2 is in a
3 gallon hempy bucket with Coco. At present the plants are in
week 3 of veg and the soil grown plant is exceeding the hempy
in height, width and overall structure by about 30%.
Unfortunately I’m a long way off from getting the final results but
I will be comparing yield, taste and potency and may be able to
give you some useful feedback in about 9-10 weeks.
B. I would have to go with soil for a greater probability
of pests.
C. Since Coco is soilless and not hydro I would say yes .
D. I don’t reuse my soil because of possible salt build up from nutes.
It can be done depending on what your soil base is. Too much work for
me so my used soil goes to vegetable garden.
Coco can be flushed and reused.
Sorry my timeline on the A/B comparison is too early to give definite
answers but I would be happy to contact you in the future when I’m
fully prepared .
Best wishes for a happy grow- Lord Blueberry
the problem lord blueberry is you are not actually comparing squat if you are admittedly using salts in your soil and fox farm soil. i mean c’mon use your head lol. i love how all these hydro ppl pay such close attention to inputs in hydro yet will call any bullshit they buy in a store like fox farm and cal it all soil as if they are equal. top that off with feeding it like hydro with salts and you have the worst test for whether soil adds flavor etc..
I’ve been growing for 12 or so years. I started in soil using the gh3 part Lucas formula, from there I did deep water cultivation, for way to long and now am on a Coco ewc perlite biochar mix using canna line recharge and some other goodies did by far this is my preferred method for over all quality and quantity.
The soil biological life is why soil would out preform coco in flavor.
Tightly packed micronutrients increase Brix level. Brix is basically shorthand for quality.
You can make soil teaming with life that eats plant food and shit out bioavailabile nutrients.
Coco can be made more alive with products like recharge but can never provide the biological activity that a method like TLO could provide. Imo that is…
I grow in coco…but am constantly looking over my shoulder at the “No till” homies
Thanks for responding people!
LB… I am all ears for what you end up with!
nodnarb… you and I have similar pasts, I am still stuck in the land of UC. I like it for the tech side of me, but I am ready to take a step or two back, or maybe it’s forward.
grambo…. that is pretty much what I expected. Soil sounds like the end all choice for killer flavor, but coco doesn’t sound far behind. I like the reusable factor a lot.
Think I am going towards coco boys!
Thanks again!
