It’s late September in the LBC. The greenhouse in the yard behind the barn has the green glow of happiness shining through the opaque walls. Seven fabric pots with 5 different strains sit off the ground caressing the FoxBarm fed roots of the mind freeing plant shooting up towards the sun. The weather is warm. The time is near.
Watching… Waiting… Whispering sweet nothings…
It all seems to be coming together when I get a call from a friend in the Emerald Triangle. I used speaker phone due to my hooves. Seeing that this was my first grow I researched everything I could to maximize my success of harvesting anything that could be passable for what I have relied on to break free from the shackles of alcohol, ADHD, anger, fear, and judging that has been a big part of my short sheep life. Hey, it’s not easy being a sheep. I have a science background and tend to over analyze and pay attention to the smallest details when performing experiments. My friend, the “sage”, has been guerrilla growing for years and has been in charge of medium sized greenhouses. He knows his stuff.
During this latest phone conversation he mentions, with a calm sense of urgency, that he needs to start harvesting some of his personal outdoor grow because he has noticed the beginnings of the dreaded Root Rot. Up to now I figured that root rot was a Humboldt problem. Wait for it… Wait for it…
I tell my sheep buddy, “I will probably harvest in a few weeks the way things are looking.”
Wait for it…
With no cares in the world I meander over to my sweet gals and unlock the unbreakable Chinese lock barring me and all the potted up kids in the neighborhood from accessing the most dangerous substance known man. Stepping into my little slice of paradise I gently brushed aside a few brown leaves coming out of the bud of my Blue Dream honey and noticed the same brown colors emitting from the center stem and top areas of the highest flower. The stem of the top cola seemed to bend easily and almost felt spongy. A sinking feeling like when your first serious partner starts off saying “we need to talk” starts to spread from my heart to all my extremities. I grabbed my phone and heard the confirmation from my buddy that I had better cancel my dinner plans with Warren Buffet and get to harvesting.
Quickly I leaped to action (as only a sheep could) and did the only thing a newer grower with the world at his hoof tips could do… I got out my laptop and started feverishly typing. I read that most growers opted to cut out the bud rot and hope that the part of the fungi they couldn’t see in the stem wouldn’t continue spreading. I know this system works, but I wanted more options. The only other options that seemed available were to harvest and destroy the plant, to chemically treat the plants, and to “Water Cure” the plants.
Wait… What?!?! WATER CURE? What the heck is that?
At the time I was new to the DGC and only saw a couple of articles on Water Curing so I went to the Inner Webs for the answers. Some old school growers and Pigeons420 have done some write-ups and videos on the subject. The idea is that through the power of OSMOSIS you can draw or pull out all of the impurities, salts, chlorophyll and terpenes (Sadly) from harvested bud. If you want to know more Duck Duck Go it. (Has that caught on yet???)
There doesn’t appear to be definitive answers on the efficacy of Water Curing in regards to bud rot. This article does not attempt to answer that question, but it does attempt to give my personal sheep review of the end product after trying the Water Curing method. Special thanks goes out to all who have tried this before including Pigeons420 and other growers form the webs.
Here’s what I would have done if I were a human and not a sheep high on my own dank:
The harvest game plan:
Plant #1: No rot; Harvest early. Normal Dry and Cure.
Plant #2: Root rot in upper cola. Harvest and Water Cure.
Plant #3: Root rot in upper cola. Harvest and Water Cure.
Plant #4: Root rot in upper cola. Harvest and Water Cure.
Plant #5: No root rot visible. Chemical treatment for bud rot to delay harvest.
Plant #6: No root rot visible. Chemical treatment for bud rot to delay harvest.
Plant #7: No root rot visible. Chemical treatment for bud rot to delay harvest.
Water Curing Method
Harvest and Jarring (Day 0)
1. Harvested infected plants.
2. Cut away visible bud rot.
3. Cut flower into small buds (1/2 inch to 3/4 inch)
4. Put into large Nason jars.
5. Fill with filtered tap water.
6. Place Red Folo cup into mouth of jar and press down until sealed (Approx. 1.5 inch of bottom of cup was left in jar).
7. Use knife to cut Red Folo cup flush with top of Nason jar.
8. Use knike to poke holes into bottom of Red Folo cup to allow trapped air out.
8. Close jar tight and make sure there is no air touching the buds.
9. Place jars into Digloo ice chest and fill ice chest with plain tap water until the water is at or above the lids of the Nason jars. The temperature of the water inside the ice chest was a constant 75 degrees Fahrenheit during the whole process.
Daily Maintenance (Day 1 to Day 8)
Performed every day for 7 days or until there was no smell to waste water.
1. Remove Nason jars from ice chest.
2. Carefully pour out waste water from jars without removing buds.
3. Slowly and carefully add new filtered tap water to jar with buds and close lid.
4. Place back into ice chest and close the lid.
Drying (Day 8 to Day 14)
Was performed in a light deprived room.
1. Remove Nason jars from ice chest.
2. Pour out waste water.
3. Remove buds from jar and carefully place on paper towels.
4. Place more paper towels on top of buds.
5. Carefully and lightly press down on paper towel and buds to remove excess water.
6. Place on drying rack and make sure the buds are not dripping water. If so, use more paper towels to remove dripping water.
7. Place box fan below drying rack with the airflow from the fan blowing up towards the drying rack.
8. Place an empty milk crate or other suitable object under the box fan to allow for unrestricted air flow.
9. Turn fan on low and check bud daily.
“Dry” Curing (Day 14 and beyond)
Only after the bud was dried properly
1. Wash and dry Nason jars used for Water Curing.
2. Place dried buds into clean and dry Nason jars and “dry” cure like normal.
The Dank Test
A month and a half after harvest.
Deep in the dark recesses of my barn stall I prepare for the worst. Before lighting up I noticed that there was little to no smell coming from the cured “Water Cured” buds. The buds were looked brownish and a shadow of what was growing just a couple of months back. Nervously, I placed a ground “Water Cured” bud into my trough and inhaled with my little sheep lungs. The draw was smooth. The exhale was smooth. There was a slight after-taste, but nothing to worry about. Now this is when my Ewe (My sheepish wife LOL) saunters in and asks what I was doing. Normally she would have suspected what I was doing and made the typical “I just got hit by a whiff of skunk” facial expression. However, this time was different. Even asking her if she smelled anything returned a confident “No”. Now that the “Water Cured” bud had passed her test it was just a matter of minutes to see how it would pass the “Dank” test. Here it comes creeping up. The actual high didn’t appear to feel as strong as a typical high for me. It definitely didn’t last as long, but I sure enjoy the feeling. It wasn’t Dank, but it was good. I will provide updates as time passes.
A day later… Still alive.
