What up DGC, I’ve been using FFOF Soil since I started growing and I wanted to know if anyone recommends a better quality soil?
What soil is the best?

Why are you unhappy with it..? I would say keep using it but maybe mix it with a bag of Happy Frog to get a nice PEAT + CoCo blend. Thats pretty much what all the boutique blends consist of. I for one have used this mix multiple times over and over in a 2×4 living soil bed. Over and Over being I mixed it once and have not touched it since. I only top dress and use cover crop. So I have been happy with the two bags of Fox Farm I bought 4 years ago and they are still going….

If you want to up your game your going to have to start making your own. Buildasoil and kis organics have all in one amendment packs to enrich soil or just go basic and use synthetics. Every company makes soil but you can get some serious inconsistencies in large batches like that.
I’ve had really good luck with buildasoil and kis organic products. Like JustCoolin said they will up your soil quality. Here’s what mixed in for a raised bed that turned out great flower.
Build a soil 2.0 nute and mineral mix
Sphagnam peat/coco 5:1
Malibu compost
Mushroom compost
Worm castings
Biochar charged with castings mammoth p and Malibu
Milled malted barley
Pumice
Pearlite
Vermiculite
NemAttack SF Pro(for fungus gnats)
Yucca extract
Also if you’ve got some old soil…. You can get a Craft Blend mix from BuildaSoil. Mix in some castings, compost and extra aeration and you’re good to go again.
Water in Recharge and Mammoth P once a week to keep the soil life strong and it pretty much takes care of itself if your environment and IPM is in check.
Loving mushroom compost. I think it’s an overlooked product.
I agree with JustCoolin and Jigawatt. I have used FFOF. It was fine. But I could build something of higher quality for a lower cost. So I did.
If you prefer to be hands off and just buy things, you can still do a buildasoil premade bag.
I was in the same boat so did some side by side comparisons. FFOF seems a little hot for seedlings. Happy frog needs perlite added or it turns hard as a brick if vegging for a long time. Roots Original did well but liked more nutes. Roots 707 is what I settled on for the last few grows. It is really hard to say which is best because it depends on your growing style. For everyone who loves one soil over others, there is also someone who says it is the worse they have used. I think it is best to pick one and work on your skills using it. Just keep in mind the starting formula in each soil varies so the nute routine you will need will also vary.
I’ve never been impressed with fox farm. Never had good luck growing with it. Promix would be the way to go with plenty of perlite. And a hydroponic fertilizer such as Jack’s. Since Promix is almost the same as hydro.
If you happen to see a bag of #4 soil by Nectar it’s a high quality soil. Depends what your wanting to get out of your soil….if your looking for more of a “water only” or if your having issues with your fox farm so you want to switch to a different quality
I second the Nectar #4. I switched to it this year from fox farm and have been very happy.. It drains better but also holds moisture which I prefer.
The best soil is pH stable and works for all stages of growth. The best brand or formula is subjective.
The best soil I have used is Ocean Forest with added vermiculite (15-20%) & biochar (5-10%). Works perfectly with my nutes (Bio Bizz).
Because of the Build.a.soil recommendations you get from several DGC and the discussions on making your own soil with local inputs and compost, it is really enticing to try. I think there’s a certain satisfaction you get from building your own that bagged soil cannot deliver. That said, the best soil for you is one that fits your style of growing.
I mostly grow in coco but for outdoors use super soil. The best “brand” I have found is coast of Maine stonington blend, excellent stuff requires little more then water.
Ocean Forrest is a great soul for me. After one run with it I use it to make compost. Compost composed of green veggies, bananas, eggshells, salmon, fruit skins, fan leaves, roots and stems from old plants. Compost tea every other week, and watering with liquid aminos derived from soy beans. To each his/her own. If it works why change?
