Why grow Auto Flowers when you can have the real Photoperiod plant with all its advantages in the same time frame using 1/3-1/2 the energy just by flowering at 2-3 weeks? Still a mystery to me, opinions? Happy Growing 🙂

Auto breeders really want your money over and over again… forever.
I caught some grief with this post on IG, I should have clarified Indoors but I thought “using 1/3-1/2 the energy” would have been a dead giveaway that I meant Indoors but………
Happy Growing 🙂
There’s a good side by side video waiting to happen right there! I have a Canuk puk with a white widow auto and a photo but both rooms occupied for another 50 . After that I will try it and we can see. So yea I wont have that answer for another 120 days or so lol but I agree with you and I bet the outcome will be far better on that photo . Time will tell
If the auto will finish in 10 weeks from the day you wet the seed then they can be worth it. A 10 week auto (getting 18 hrs) will have about the same total light expense as a 9 week photo if you have a 3-4 week seedling to veg stage.
If you only grow from seed then autos can be appealing since most of them are feminized. Autos allow you to explore many different cultivars in a short amount of time. I think I grew around 15 different autos in my first year of growing and I got a decent idea of what terp profiles worked best for me. On average they are not as potent, but there are some breeders whose genetics can compete with photos.
Obviously the main issue with them is cloning. Although it is possible, it’s not sustainable to keep genetics around unless you make seeds with the clones and then they aren’t exactly the same thing. If you grow for medicine, it’s harder for autos to make practical sense. I got sad when I found an auto that was amazing and realized I can never recreate that exact profile. I switched to photos and now I have consistent medicine I can rely on.
Autos are fun, challenging and give you a good test of your growing skills in order to achieve 1/4lb+ plants. I still grow them in my veg space from time to time, but Im usually too focused on my perpetual to give them their due diligence.
Key word there is Fun , that’s really part of it all too . And what’s more fun than different strains all finishing quickly from seeds ! I’m with you on the photos , never been to any cups or anything like that but are the autos in a different category than photos? That may be a silly question to some people but ignorance is bliss on my end here . My photos are much more consistent and powerful than any autos I’ve done but some of the autos were damn close and like you said there , hard to repeat .
Well, I did a little experimenting out here in Northern California. I had some stuff out in early spring and some stuff out into winter. I believe that using a greenhouse with some light deprivation and heat assist, that you can probably run three consecutive outdoor crops a year. Plus we need a reason to use growdots! 🤙🏼
3 crops using auto flower that is.
For me it’s necessary for the time being. Just got back into growing after 15 years. Tents and LED are all new to me. Unfortunately I didn’t research enough and bought a cheap 2×4 tent that leaks light something horrible. After this auto run I’ll clean it up, crawl inside and attempt to make it light fast.
It was also a novelty. When I stopped growing I had a huge bag of lowryder seeds. Super unstable and worthless. When I saw how far the genetics have come I had to see for myself.
