I would like to build a medium for auto-flowering cannabis that I would only need to water and eventually top dress. I plan on using coco as a base for the medium but if there is something better please let me know. As far as I can tell Dr. Earth premium gold all purpose 4-4-4 and girl bud and bloom booster 3-9-4 together in a pre-amended medium would work well from seed to flower. Which products do you suggest using and at what measurements per gallon of medium should I use them? (not ratios) I’d love to stick with one company for fertilizers/nutrients and just don’t know where to begin. I have only used Dyna-gro products in the past with my photo period plants and want to switch.
Building a medium for autoflowers

Coco does not have the ability to hold nutrients like soil or peat. It also has to be watered quite often to stay hydrated. Following the suggested amount from the fertilizer supplier is usually a good start. Amend prior to planting and top dressing in one a week usually works. A new setup will always take some fine tuning.
thanks for the help!
If you really want to use Coco, go with some Pro Mix HPCC, you can amend with either of those ferts you mentioned. Go half strength.
Thanks for the tips. After doing a lot of research I’m leaning against the Coco route. Been watching mr. Cannucks YouTube stuff but not sure if his methods are the best route.
Obviously I’d like to grow autos in an easy fashion. I’d like to be able to just water and top dress once in a while.
With super soil do you have to ph your tap water?
Of course the internet is filled with lots of conflicting Bs and it’s hard to root through the arguments.
Thanks a lot for your input so far!!!
Look into layering. I for years before getting into hydro would use a 3-5 gallon fabric pots (use whatever you want) and would basically take bags of roots organic and build a soil and make I guess what some would call a “hotter soil” that would go on the bottom half of the pot and the top would be just basic roots organic.
The theory is the roots on top provides a nutritious yet mild environment for the seedling and veg stage and as roots develop and reach the ammended soil, they are large enough to handle the stronger “food” below.
Hit that with recharge weekly and sit back and enjoy.
This will take you right through flower.
In some grows, I would feed a little “extra” during flowering but honestly did not see a noticeable difference aside from PH’d water.
With Photos you would most likely need to supplement but for autos this approach really cut down on my feeding regimen and allowed me to focus more on the environment and dialing that in.
Hope my two cents helps.
Thanks for the advice!
Ive heard the term “recharge” a lot. What is this? Just top feed?
And i’ve been looking into roots organic.
What type of roots organic soil?
Thanks again!
I use roots orignial line. There 707 has less perlite and holds more water and is a bit “hotter” meaning it has a bit more nutrient out of the bag. The 707 is better for transplants versus seedlings.
So yeah roots original and the recharge you hear about is microbes! Check out real growers website, its a product scotty developed.
Google microbes and living soil to catch up rather than me getting long winded.
There is also countless info on the dudegrows about recharge and its benefits. If you are using soil, you should have a microbe product whether recharge or another. But recharge helps support the dgc and has a proven track record.
If you want to just water check out the buildasoil living soil formula. Super easy just top dress with dry amendments every couple weeks. Do a top dress at the beginning and another a month later and you should be good to go no water PH needed or adding nutes to water.
As long as you can fit some bigger pots should be the best option for easy water only.
There’s some water only soil brands floating around I’ve just never had good drainage with the store bought ones. Have to add a bunch or vermiculite or pumice to the store brought water only bags generally.
Thanks for the advice!
Do you think living soil or a layered super soil?
And would you recommend 3 or 5 gallon pots for autos? Space isn’t really a concern.
Living soil.
And no less than 15 gallon fabric pots whether they’re autos or not.
My last autoflower I just harvested about 4 weeks ago was 6 foot 5 inches tall growing in my 25 gallon no-till pot and I got 7oz 10gr and my lights were fucked up for the first half of the grow.
Holy shit! That’s one big f’n autoflower!!!!
Don’t think I have the space or $ to be using 15 gallon pots. But wow that’s incredible.
Id keep it simple. Autoflowers wont like too HOT of soil or top dressings.. Get a peat base soil and a coco based soil. Mix them and water ReCharge in. Sprout your seeds in a towel and then by the time you plant your seed your soil will be ready. Then top dress your “flower” ( high Phos ) blend about a week or two in so by the time it waters in you’ll have your plant ready for bloom. CoCo Loco or Light Warrior mixed with Happy Frog will get you a really nice base without having to cook or balance anything. Just add ReChrage and Grow. If you try to mix teas or top dress HOT powders you will piss the plant off. Photo period plants would love that stuff but Autos (depending on strain) usually like nothing but water and minor interventions.

Thanks really appreciate the input!
I have to do some research on recharge.
No clue.
Thanks again!
Ive use doctor earths nutes on 3 different auto strains while vegging in coco 5 gal fabric bags. Then switch to roots organics bloom first sign of flower. Both i used 1 tablespoon. Top dressed. It worked great. PH your water is a must for coco. I try to keep it between 5.5 and 6.2. Also both nutes already have beneficial microbes and fungi aswell. Good luck
You just top dressed? Or did you mix it in soil before potting?

There’s my recipe.
Or follow the build a soil recipe as was mentioned above. 👍
Thank you!
Ended up with sphagnum peat moss, Coco and vermiculite (no petite available).
Tossed in 2 tbspn each Dr. Earth all purp. And flower/5 gal.
A c4 broke soil in less than 10 hrs.
We will see.
How did it turn out wclazerdub?
Beautiful so far. I need to call/mag/iron a lot and I just started using recharge.
They’re at week 7 and 3ft tall at least.
Really happy so far.
