Why does this weed I got at the dispensary smell like hay? It appears to be dank but smells like dead grass.

Because they didn’t properly dry and cure it. Hek, they didn’t properly dry it. Not uncommon in legalized markets. Producers just want to get it in the bag and the check in the bank.
Rushed from chop to market. Just say no! to legal weed.
Not cool
What the others said, but also outdoor weed tends to have a little more grassy smell from the little dispensary weed I’ve been exposed to. Top shelf indoor is quality, but a little dry mostly. I’m in socal, where’re you?
There are a few reasons for this. I work in the cultivation department for a medical grow and I used to be in Processing. First, they wet trim. That right there would be enough to give you some hay smell no matter how you dry and cure. Then after wet trimming….in a machine, they dry it in about 5 days before they bag it. It does get burped but by that point its already too late. Like someone before me said, rush to market.
Years ago I wet trimmed, you can still get lovely terps and flavors sans hay taste doing wet trim. But I switched long ago to dry trim. Either way a commercial place chooses, wet or dry, it still isn’t going to be proper product. I worked on the grow team at our states largest indoor facility, I have seen some shit of epic face palm proportions.
Yep its the world we live in, keep in mind it could still be a sleeper. I’ve had some hay that tested out at 22% and was such a good buzz. The down-side is nose and bag appeal is what sells. Here on the east coast its all pre-packed which is annoying because you see a decent price, grab it and get larf or hay smelling stuff. Its business and you should be able to return something you are not happy with as aconsumer but let me know how that goes hahaha. Its a pig of an industry if you ask me!

I’ve had similar experience with this. seems everyone is out for that great looking picture so focused on the looks and forgets the most important part the dry and cure! quality over quantity seems to be forgotten! I have had some dank shit too I wont lie but it has been the exception to find good smell, taste and a nice high. I have overall been disappointed with my legal (specifically flower) experience overall(thru multiple states / dispensaries and over a few years) Unfortunately the masses still buy it(at <$65 bucks and Eighth) so I dont think this will change for some time and this is why we need a true craft markets supported by locals.
Stay Lifted!
If you bought a carton of milk at the grocery store and it smelled like shit, there would be no argument if you returned it for a replacement or a refund. When a customer reports an issue it should be looked at by the retail staff/management as an opportunity in all respects; for immediate customer satisfaction and for that customer to tell their friends about their experience. The best advertising is a satisfied customer. They should be falling over themselves to make the situation right for you. If they do not, they are doing a poor job and they simply do not deserve your return business nor your recommendation, imo.

I doubt if it will change. Around here, they are beating on the door a month before harvest. The stuff goes out wet, the day of harvest. I charge 1/2 of retail so it will leave in one transaction instead of 90 transactions for twice as much. Inevitably you get begged to do fronts that forget the debt the day they walk out with a bag.
I have better things to do than answer the phone all day or chase nickles. Namely working on the next crop. Kind of like how you can’t get a good tomato at the grocery store – ever. If you want it good, you grow it. It will never go back to the old way. It’s just the way it is.
Sitting here looking at 2 pounds, just trimmed. It’s gone as soon as I make a phone call.
Thats the same thing here in Colorado. Most of the disp smoke isn’t worth it. The cure is where the magic happens..
I “heard” the dispensaries will keep it for a week in dry air before even weighing it and paying, Don’t know if its true because I don’t deal with them.
