Wanting to know if the decreased hang height of the Scorpion with it’s wider overall dimensions compared to the 600 are worth the extra price. Trying to decide between these two for a 5×5 tent:

HLG 600 Rspec – https://horticulturelightinggroup.com/collections/lamps/products/hlg-600-rspec
I have not had a chance to play with the new scorpion lights yet, but I’m a dealer for HLG so maybe I can help explain their lineup.
The scorpion lights are running roughly the same wattage as their non-scorpion equivalent, but they are spreading the wattage out over more diodes. This means more efficiency and a better spread at close distances to the canopy.
The Scorpion lights were designed with tents and multilevel rack style grows in mind. Spreading the power out allows you to hang the lights much closer to the plants.
So you get two big advantages with the scorpion, slightly higher efficiency and better spread at a closer hanging distance.
If those advantages are worth the extra $$$ really depends on your setup and what kind of grow you want to do.
If you are growing in a space with a higher ceiling and you are less concerned with efficiency, the regular lights are a better deal.
If you are growing in a low tent or a rack setup and height is a concern, the scorpion would be a better fit. If you really care about getting the absolute highest efficiency, the scorpion would also be the right choice. It’s one of the most efficient lights on the market right now.
Finally, another option I would consider is the HLG diy kits. A pair of the HLG 260 or HLG 320 kits would also be a killer light setup. They take a little bit of work to assemble but it’s not that hard and you save a ton of money by putting them together yourself.
I think two 320w kits is actually my favorite lighting option for a 5×5 at the moment.
