Hello there El Duderino and Mr. Real, I have just ordered Recharge for the first time and am excited for it to show up in my mailbox. I’ve been growing for a number of years and am currently running a modified hybrid super soil-ish system. Without going into too much unnecessary detail, my basic setup is that I run coco drain to waste on an automated drip system with Canna CoGR Flores, among other additives, and I also add organic components to my coco. This is where the super soil-ish idea comes into play. I pre”cook” my organic components (the usual stuff, blood and bone meal etc) in worm castings for about 70 days before I mix it into the coco. My question is this; can I add recharge to my castings and organic amendments mix while it cooks to help super charge it with microbes and make the organic nutes more readily available? If so, how much should I add on a per gallon of castings basis? Should I add it dry or water it in and let it “cook”? To be honest I’m gonna try it regardless I’m just looking for your guidance. Mr. Real has confirmed that Recharfe us excellent as a compost starter. This suggests it holds potential for just the use– supersoil innoculant–you propose.
I imagine a more rigorous scientific answer would contain more conditional statements and/or practical suggestions for a procedure (such as the ratio of Recharfe to volume of soil mox), but theoretically it should work.
When you moisten your super soil before leaving it to cook, use recharge at double or triple strength (1-3tsp per gallon) You can also add Biocozyme at 5ml per gallon, and/or Mammoth P at anywhere between 1-4ml per gallon to get it breaking down fast.
Great comments above. I’ve been using it in the same way WVKind is suggesting and its very effective. It seems to speed up cooking time and I always see tons of awesome white fuzzy fungal growth and other biological things happening on the top layer of my cooking soil. Its now a mandatory part of my soil prep routine.
I also want to suggest that you mix ALL your ingredients with your coco and cook everything together for 4-6 weeks instead of adding things to your castings and cooking them separate from your coco.
If you mix inert coco + enriched castings and plant right away, I suspect your mix will still be cooking and will likely cause you unnecessary headaches. These two ingredients will still need time to cook together before you plant.
Mix it all together and let all those good nutrient flavors cook together like a tasty stew(or soup). This process of everything coming together in the mix is what turns your coco + castings + amendments into SOIL!
It also sounds like you are transitioning from coco to soil and I just wanna say as someone who has done it: DO NOT BE AFRAID! There are only good things ahead.
Sounds like you are doing homemade soil + bio canna nutrients which is exactly what I was doing not long ago. Is still some of the best stuff I’ve ever grown and it was super easy.
I highly recommend a basic homemade soil mix cooked for a month and supplemented with recharge and canna bio nutrients for anyone looking for an easy organic setup that will produce top notch quality.
Thanks for the comments guys! @Soup I am actually using Canna CoGR Vega and Flores. It’s their grow and bloom A/B for coco instead of the more common Coco A/B that you use for the whole grow. The only other things I run are Biocozyme, Cal-Mag and Massive. The organic bits are just castings and a product called Power Bloom by Gaia Green (a Canadian company eh). The ingredients in it are: Fishbone meal, bone meal, glacial rock dust, mined potassium sulphate, fossilized carbon complex, rock phosphate, greensand, kelp meal, gypsum, bat guano. My soil mix is 55% coco coir, 30% perlite (so I can feed more aggressively), 15% castings and I use the Power Bloom at 4 tbsp per gallon. This recipe has been getting me dankness and I’m hoping recharge will just push it over the top. I’m always open to suggestions too. Been thinking about adding crab shell meal to the mix for the chitosan.
If you are adding recharge and haven’t been using it before, consider backing your ppms down a bit at least until you get used to it. Recharge makes nutrients more available, so if you add it in while you are running higher ppms you risk overfeeding.
Crab shell meal is good stuff but its also the only thing I’ve ever managed to burn plants with while topdressing. Its a great thing to use but be careful, especially since you already have a lot of other phosphorus containing ingredients in that Gaia Green.
Sounds like you’ve got a great mix and know what you are doing. Just be careful adding lots of rich organic stuff to your soil AND liquid feeding heavily. I’ve been down that path and while it can work out great, it can easily go horribly wrong if you over do it. 🙂
