I have a multicamera DVR system I haven’t gotten around to installing. I am planning on placing two or three cameras in my flower room. While I know I can disable the IR night vision, if I leave it on, will it cause issues with the plants in flower during my dark period?
Security Cameras with Infrared Night Vision in the grow?

Only one way to find out 100%, but I’d strongly recommend you keep the IR off. I run same indoors and out, but the IR is pretty damn intense. Watch on the video playback and you can see the spread and intensity of your specific IR. IR is built into most quality growlights. You’re EXTREMELY likely to have issues if you run IR during “lights off,” as the dark cycle is no longer dark for your plants
I’m not sure how similar they are but I use a Ring security cam in the corner of my tent for about 2 years now and haven’t had a single issue. I’ve heard the night vision on the camera can fuck with the plants but it’s invisible green light and that’s the only acceptable color to use during the dark cycle. We can’t see it but I think the plants can Ive heard. I can vouch for using a Ring cam in flower but anything else I cant say. Its a lot of fun to track your grow and catch intruders. (Bud pickers)… Stay blasted!
This is the best research I’ve seen on the subject – https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0255232
“We applied nighttime photons from near infrared (NIR) LEDs (peak 850 nm) over a 12 h dark period. Flowering was delayed in Glycine max and Cannabis sativa (two photosensitive species) by 3 and 12 days, respectively, as the flux of photons from NIR LEDs was increased up to 83 and 116 μmol m-2 s-1. This suggests that long wavelength photons from NIR LEDs can activate phytochromes (convert Pr to Pfr) and thus alter plant development.”
Now, the question would be if the light from your camera is as high as the 83 and 116 μmol m-2 s-1 used here. To which this says –
“Similarly, low levels of constant light throughout the dark period, here called nighttime photons, can also disrupt flowering in SDP. Pfr plays a vital role in this process [14]; however, the mechanisms governing the response are only partially understood.”
So, if you’re really interested in the answer, follow the link above 🙂
It’s looking like we’re running them with night-vision off!
Yo on a side-note. LEDs are on right? My humidifier has a dim led that cannot be shut off. So far the plants haven’t seemed to mind.
‘LEDs are on’ should read LEDs are ok?
From what I hear as long as the source of light doesn’t mimic the outside light you’re ok.
